A practical checklist for switching EHRs

Changing EHRs feels risky because the whole practice runs on it. A little preparation removes most of that risk.

Before you sign

  • List every workflow your team uses daily
  • Ask how your data will be exported and imported
  • Confirm which labs, pharmacies and payers are connected
  • Get the go-live plan in writing

During setup

Name one person as the internal lead. Review imported patients and appointments for a sample of charts before go-live, and rebuild your most-used templates first.

Go-live week

Lighten the schedule for the first two or three days, keep a shared list of questions, and hold a ten-minute huddle at the end of each day.
